Welcome! My name is Emily O'Connor and I am a junior at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. My hometown is Bellefontaine, Ohio. We are a city of a little over 13,000 with a lot of corn fields and dirt roads. Fun fact: we have the first concrete street in America!
I am studying journalism and professional writing with a focus in editing. I fell in love with journalism during my first semester at school. I have a wide range of experience from newspapers, broadcasting and public relations. I have written for The Miami Student, a student-run newspaper on campus, I was a reporter and broadcaster for WPKO/WBLL in Bellefontaine, and finally I was an intern at Honda North American Corporate Communications this past summer.
I have written everything from hard-hitting news stories, profiles, local event coverage, campus issues and press releases. While at WPKO/WBLL, I reported a 'Summer Travel Series' where I highlighted local tourist attractions and events for the community. I wrote for the online news source, peakofohio.com, while I created radio packages for the evening broadcast. At Honda, I helped coordinate and organize the Team Honda Week of Service while running the official Facebook page for the event. I wrote profiles on associates and press releases about Honda events and/or happenings. I also created a mini-series for the national HondaTV broadcast titled "This Month in Honda History." Each week I reported daily media grids with story pitches and release dates and finally created news-worthy tweets for the national Honda Twitter feed.
On campus, I have a lot of leadership experience due to my involvement in organizations. I am currently serving at the Member Development Chairman for Delta Delta Delta and the Secretary for the Choraliers Women's Choir. As the Member Development Chairman, I help coordinate and create sisterhood activities for 200 sisters, attend weekly meetings, and collaborate with other officers serving on the Executive Board. I am the former Assistant Philanthropy Chairman where I assisted in raising over $69,000 for our national philanthropy St. Jude Children's Research Hospital (that number is the amount raised by our chapter at Miami!).
In my free time, I enjoy being a Harry Potter fanatic (Team Ravenclaw!) and playing/singing with my acoustic guitar. I also enjoy spending time with my family, friends and two dogs. Sadie is a German Shepard/Husky mix and Max is a Siberian Husky, and yes, they are very cute.
